The M-1870 Bayonet
in Pictures

The M-1870 bayonet was designed to be used with the new Berdan II breech loading cartridge rifle. Like many of its predecessors it is a simple cruciform socket bayonet that is fixed to the muzzle of the rifle by means of a locking ring.

The Locking Ring

Here are two views of the locking ring system that was used to fasten the bayonet to the rifle.  Such systems were common during the mid-19th century, but would eventually be replaced by the blade bayonet in the coming decades.  Note that the serial number of the weapon can also be seen in the bottom right picture

The Bayonet Tip

The tip of the cruciform M-1970 bayonet tapers down to a flat point.  Despite the fact that it does not seem very sharp, it is a very dangerous weapon when placed at the end of a rifle and thrust at an opponent.

Other Views of the Bayonet

Here are two additional views of the M-1870 bayonet.  The bottom left picture shows both the angle of the bayonet and part of its cruciform structure.  The bottom right picture shows how the bayonet looks when looking through it.
