The M-1891 Bayonet
in Pictures

The M-91 bayonet was designed to be used with the new magazine rifles of the period - the Mosin-Nagants. It is a simple cruciform socket bayonet that is fixed to the muzzle of the rifle by means of a French-style locking ring. The locking ring was considered by many to be weak and obsolete, but the Russians continued to use it anyway. The bayonet can be fitted to the Dragoon rifle, Cossack rifle, and standard infantry rifle. The tip of the bayonet is a flathead screwdriver point that can be used for disassembling the weapon or opening the magazine catch. The M-91 was apparently not issued with a scabbard and was supposed to be kept on the rifle at all times. The soldier simply reversed the bayonet on his rifle when it was not in use.

The Locking Ring

Here is a close-up view of the locking ring mechanism of the bayonet.  As stated above, this system was viewed as obsolete by most other nations of the time.

In this picture the serial number of the weapon can also be seen.

The Bayonet Tip

The tip of the M-91 bayonet ends in a flathead screwdriver point.  This allows it to be used as a tool for disassembling the weapon or opening the magazine.
