In this section the orders and medals of the early to mid-1930's will be described.  Very few new orders were developed during this period, the emphasis seemed to be on badges.  Documentation, when available, will be pictured along with the medals themselves.

Order of the Red Star

The Order of the Red Star was awarded for outstanding achievements in the defense of the Soviet Union (both in war and peace), in the ensuring of state security, in the promotion of military science, the development of military equipment, and for personal courage and valor in battle. It could be conferred on foreign citizens.

The first Order was presented to Vassili Blucher - a civil war hero and military leader. It was given for combat operations by the Special Far Eastern Army in the military conflict on the Chinese Eastern Railway in 1929.

The newspaper Krasnaya Zvezda (Red Star) was the first organization to receive the Order. It was given for the paper's contribution to combat training and political education in the Red Army.

From 1930 to 1941 only 21,500 people received this award. During the Great Patriotic War the order was awarded 2,860,000 times. Several hundred units and formations were honored with it. During that war many foreigners also received the award for their contributions in Lend-Lease convoys.

The Order of the Badge of Honor was awarded to citizens of the Soviet Union for outstanding achievements in production, scientific research, social and cultural activity, as well as for the promotion of economic, scientific, technological, and cultural ties between the Soviet Union and other nations. It can also be awarded for significant contributions to basic and applied research.

The first Order of the Badge of Honor was awarded to Artykbai Tillyabayev, manager of the Batyr Collective Farm in Uzbekistan in 1936 for his high yields of cotton. The first collective to earn the Order was Open Hearth Plant No. 2 of the Kirov Steel Works in Makeyevka. During the Great Patriotic War more than 66,000 servicemen received this order.

This order was replaced by the Order of Honor in December 28, 1988.
