The M91/30 Bayonet
details and pictures

The M-91/30 bayonet is simply a modernized version of the old M-1891 bayonet.  Its designers replaced the locking ring attachment with a spring loaded catch that was stronger and easier to use.  While an improvement over the M-1891, most nations of the world in the 1930's viewed socket bayonets as old fashioned and were switching to the blade type.   The Soviets chose to stick with their older proven design, but experimented with the blade design on other weapons.

This bayonet can be fitted on the M-91/30, M1891, Dragoon, and Cossack rifles.  The tip of the bayonet is a flathead screwdriver point that can be used for disassembling the weapon or opening the magazine catch. The M-91/30 was rarely issued with a scabbard, and was generally supposed to be kept on the rifle at all times. The soldier simply reversed the bayonet on his rifle when it was not in use.

The Locking Ring

Here is a close-up view of the locking ring mechanism of the bayonet.  As stated above, this system was viewed as obsolete by most other nations of the time.

In this picture the serial number of the weapon can also be seen.

The Bayonet Tip

The tip of the M-91/30 bayonet also ends in a flathead screwdriver point.  Unlike its predecessor, this point is more streamlined.

This point allows it to be used as a tool for disassembling the weapon or opening the magazine.
