Germany invades Poland at 04:45am.  The nations of Norway, Finland and Switzerland declare their neutrality.  Italy claims that it is a "non-belligerent" nation.

17th

Red Army under the command of General S. Timoshenko invades Poland.

18th

Red Army reaches Lvov.

 
19th
Soviet troops occupy the Polish city of Vilna and reach the Hungarian frontier.

27th

Warsaw surrenders to Germany.

29th

Poland is partitioned between Germany and the Soviet Union.
