The M-50 Fuze Assembly

The nose of the O-822 mortar shell is made of bakalite.  The M-50 fuse is screwed into the threads inside the bakalite nose.  The underneath the fuse there is a rubber washer-like item.

The nose and fuse assembly are both screwed onto the shell body to make a complete round.

Fuse Markings

There are a number of markings on the M-50 fuse which can be seen here.  The markings on the bottom left picture are: MP 510.  The marks on the bottom right picture are: 369-43.

The Shell Body and Fins

The body of the shell is made of very crudely cast metal.  When the fuse is removed, the inside of the shell looks like the top right picture.  The explosive filler is placed within this cavity.

The bottom right picture shows the rear section of the shell.  It has three crude pieces of sheet metal welded to the sides of the tail.  These sheets have been folded up on either side to make two fins each.  This very simple machining process gives the shell its characteristic six tail fins.

On either side of each fin are two holes.  These help vent the gasses from the shell's propellant.
