The PG-2 HEAT Rocket in Pictures

This section has many high detail pictures of the PG-2 HEAT rocket. Virtually every part of the rocket is photographed and described. To go to a specific part of the weapon simply click on the desired section below. I should warn you that some of these pages may take a little while to load.

The Warhead Assembly

The PG-2 rocket has a large void space in the nose cone.  Behind that is located the main shaped charge.  The picture below shows what the explosive is stored.  It also shows the the cone that shapes the explosive charge.

PG-2 Cross Section

A cutaway of the PG-2 warhead is shown above.  The part shown in red is the explosive shaped charge.  The detonator is shown in gray, and the cardboard spacer is illustrated in brown.  The black and gray-blue spaces are the body of the rocket.  All spaces shown in white are empty void spaces.

The Rocket Exterior

The PG-2 rocket is a simple device made of thin stamped metal and aluminum.  The nose of the rocket, seen below, is where the markings - if any - are written.

The body of the rocket is also a simple stamped metal construction.  It is hexagonal in shape, primarily so that each of the 6 fins will face outward in a symmetrical pattern.

The rocket motor is screwed onto the rocket separately at the rear.  A detail of the rear of the rocket is shown to the right.

The Rocket Fins

The stabilizer fins of the PG-2 rocket are exceedingly primitive.  They are simple thin sheets of metal that have been spot welded onto the hexagonal body.  They are held against the rocket by a metal retaining band.  When the rocket is loaded into the weapon this band slips off into the recess just ahead of the fins (visible in the top right picture).

The fins are then held in place by the RPG-2 tube.   This means that the rocket is not simply pushed in, it must be rotated clockwise as it is pushed into the launcher.  This can take some effort as the operator is working against a great degree of friction.

The fins spring out as soon as they leave the tube of the launcher.

The Detonator Assembly

The detonator is a simple impact type that fits behind the warhead of the PG-2 rocket.  When the rocket impacts its target a plunger within the detonator will fire the priming charge and set it off.  This detonates the main charge.

Below you can see the detonators primary components.  The plunger can clearly be seen on the left of the largest piece.  This side of the detonator is also shown at the bottom right.
