More Pictures of the
Tu-95/Tu-142 'Bear'
Strategic Heavy Bomber

This section is dedicated to more pictures of the Tu-95/Tu-142 'Bear' bombers and the many variants of this amazing aircraft.  As always, our pictures are Cold War originals that we hold in our physical possession.  They were all taken at some time when the aircraft was in active service.

Dropping a sonobuoy

In this picture you can see a Tu-142 maritime patrol variant in the process of dropping a sonobuoy which is used to detect submarines.  The photo is undated and gives no location.

The Bear from below

This series of photographs show close ups of the underside of a Bear H.  The upper picture shows the tail section of the aircraft in great detail.  Numerous panels and hatches can be clearly seen.

The lower picture was taken seconds later by the NATO reconnaissance aircraft.  It also shows the numerous panels and hatches of the bomber.

During the Cold War it was photographs like these that enabled NATO analysts to determine when the Bear had been modified and what the modifications may be capable of.

When combined with electronic intelligence intercepts the exact function of sensor pods and radar sets could be determined.

No date was given with the photo.

The Bear-G

In this picture you can see the G variant of the Bear bomber.  Several electronics blisters can be seen on the fuselage and tail of the aircraft.  It was taken on 27 August 1986, but no location was given in the photo description.

Tu-142 escorted by a US Navy A-7

In this picture you can see a Bear being escorted by an American A-7 attack aircraft.  Incidents like these were very common during the Cold War.  The photo does not give a location or date in its description.

An approaching Bear D

Here we have a photograph of a Bear D in the distance as it approaches the camera.  It was taken on 17 September 1989 somewhere over the Northern Pacific Ocean.

Tomcat and Bear

In this picture you can see another encounter where a NATO fighter escorts a Bear that it met over the ocean.  The fighter in this case is an American F-14 'Tomcat' serving with the US Navy.  The picture does not state where it was taken nor does it give the date.

East meets West in color

Here is another encounter over the ocean between an F-14 'Tomcat' and a Tu-95/142 'Bear'.  As with the previous photo this picture does not list the location or date when it was taken.
