The M-47 Bayonet
details and pictures

The M-47 bayonet was the first bayonet designed for use with the AK-47 assault rifle.   The simple blade bayonet attaches by sliding onto the muzzle and locking in place by means of a spring loaded catch.  The M-47 has no provision for a wire cutter attachment, but that would come later, with the M-59.

This bayonet can be fitted only on the AK-47 and AKM rifles.  The flash suppressor of the AK-74 and SVD preclude the use of the M-47 bayonet.  As with all Soviet blade bayonets, the M-47 was issued with a scabbard that was to be worn on the utility belt to the right of the buckle.

The Attachment Point

Here is a close-up view of the mechanism that the bayonet uses to attach to the rifle.  The tip of the muzzle protrudes through the ring at the front, while a catch at the rear of the bayonet locks around the bayonet lug on the rifle.  The release button can be seen at the bottom front of the bayonet.

The Bayonet Scabbard

The scabbard of the M-47 is simple and functional.  It is a simple metal scabbard with a canvas belt loop attached.  A leather frog secures the bayonet in the scabbard.  There is also a small hole at the tip of the scabbard, presumably for water drainage in the event that it became wet.
