The Il-28 in Photographs

This section is dedicated to pictures of the Il-38 'May' maritime recon aircraft.  Our pictures are authentic and were taken at sometime the aircraft was in service.

We will put descriptions with as many of the pictures as we can so that a greater understanding of the Il-38 'May' can be gained.

A close up view of the Il-38

Here we have two photographs of the front of the Il-38 'May'.  The one at right shows the engines and cockpit area.

While the one below is a very close-up photo of the forward section that clearly shows many small details, including the sensor dome beneath the aircraft.

Color photo of the Il-38 Nose

This picture was taken on 25 May 1982 at 17,000 feet by an aircraft from the aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy.  If you look beneath the window you will see an 'Excellent Aircrew' symbol painted in red.  Its hard to see, but close up it resembles a streaking jet inside a red pentagon.

Dropping a sonobuoy

Here you can see an Il-38 dropping a sonobuoy from its internal bay.  Like the aircraft in the previous picture it also has the 'Excellent Aircrew' marking on its nose.  In the background you can see an A-7 of the United States Navy keeping a close watch on the Il-38.  This picture was taken on 24 November 1979 by the Navy.  No location was given in the photograph.

Over the USS Midway

In this photograph we can see an Il-38 'May' flying over the USS Midway.

The picture was taken on 18 May 1979 by the US Navy.  No location was given.
