'Kara' Class / Project 1134B
Guided Missile Cruiser
In Pictures

This section is dedicated to pictures of the 'Kara' class / Project 1134B guided missile cruiser.  We would like to point out that all of our pictures are all authentic and were taken at some time when the Kara was in active service.  We will add more photographs as they are acquired, but until then, will do our best with what we have.

The 'Nikolaev' at sea

Here is a US Navy photo of one of the Kara class cruisers, the Nikolaev, at sea.  Most of the warship can be seen in great detail.  A Ka-25 'Hormone' helicopter can also be seen on the rear flight deck.   This picture was taken by the US Navy sometime in December of 1983.  No location was given.

The Kara in the Pacific

This photo was taken by a United States navy P-3 Orion patrol aircraft flying approximately 750 miles west of Midway island on 11 April 1985.  The cruiser was operating with nine other ships of the Pacific fleet.  All were sailing in a northeasterly direction.  At the time it was the largest Soviet task force to enter the Central Pacific.

Kara 539 at anchor in the Mediterranean

This photograph was taken by a US Navy unit based in Naples, Italy.  It shows a Kara class cruiser at anchor somewhere in the Mediterranean Sea in March of 1973.

A view of the 'Tashkent'

In this picture you can see the port side of Kara 518, called the 'Tashkent'.  This picture was taken by the US Navy on 7 May 1988, but no location was given.

A large composite photo of Kara 585

These two pictures are of Kara class cruiser 585 named the 'Petropavlovsk'.  They are noteworthy because of the level of detail they show.  Virtually every weapon system and sensor array can be seen here.  Both pictures were part of a set taken by the US Navy sometime during the Cold War, but neither picture lists a date or location.
