More about the uniform... The M-1985 summer enlisted field uniform was developed from the khaki VDV uniform that was first shown during exercise 'Zapad 81'. This uniform differed from the VDV pattern in that it featured two cargo pockets and were worn over the trousers - not tucked into the trousers with suspenders as was the case with the 1981 VDV uniform. Pockets on the tunic differ significantly from the prior uniform. The two breast and two cargo pockets are secured with button closures, while the shoulder pockets are secured with velcro (a new innovation for Soviet uniforms at the time). |
|
The uniform's trousers come with two open pockets at the hip and two thigh pockets secured by plastic buttons. The fly has a hook and eye closure and a row of buttons. A small synthetic leather/cloth belt is worn with the trousers. Stirrups at the end of each leg are fitted with a button fastener to improve the fit of the trousers when bloused into boots. It should be noted that this uniform is identical to the officer uniform in every way except for the attached insignia and belts. |
Service Chronology The M-1985 summer enlisted field uniform
marked a dramatic departure from the uncomfortable uniforms of the 1960's.
It was functional, had ample cargo space, and looked very modern. The
uniform was officially adopted for the army in 1985 as a replacement for the
M-1969 pattern. |
