Service Patches
of the Soviet Merchant Marine Fleet
(1979-1991)

This section covers some of the service patches that were worn by members of the Soviet Merchant Marine Fleet (known as MORFLOT) of the late period Soviet Union.  Also covered in this section are the chevrons of students of the Soviet Nakhimov school.  Both of these organizations contributed to Soviet naval readiness and capability. The selection of patches, stripes, and chevrons we have to view are listed below.

Morflot Fleet Patch

The branch of service patch was worn on the sleeve by the members of the Soviet merchant marine service.

MorFlot Enlisted Chevrons

Here we have an example of the rank chevrons issued to MorFlot personnel.  The writing at the top signifies that the serviceman is a member of the merchant marine, the meaning of symbol in the middle of the patch is uncertain at present.  If it follows the military pattern then it would mean ships engineering, but this is just conjecture.  The two chevrons at the bottom show the serviceman's rank.

Nakhimov School Chevrons

The chevrons shown here were worn by students of the Soviet Nakhimov schools.  These schools not only taught children the usual variety of subjects, but showed them the ways to the sea and prepared them for eventual service in the Soviet naval services.  These chevrons differ from the VMF fleet cadet chevrons in that they lack the star found on the VMF versions.
