The Russian Federation
and the Chechnya War
Civil and Political Events
(1992-2001)

No discussion about a nations military can be complete without showing the civilian life of the time. This is because no military exists in a vacuum, it is a product of its times. This section will try to give the reader a glimpse of what life was like during the era of the Russian Federation during the period between 1992 and 2001. Currently we have very few things here, but more will be added as time permits.

Campaign Poster for General Alexandr Lebed

Here is a poster from the Russian 1996  election.  It urges voters to 'Be With Us!' and vote for General Alexandr Lebed.

General Lebed had served with distinction during the Afghanistan war and helped broker a cease fire treaty in Chechnya.  He died in a helicopter accident in 2002 in the Kraznoyarsk district of Russia.

The poster itself shows how far Russia had come since the Soviet collapse of 1991.

Russian 100 Ruble Note
Dated 1993

Here we have a 100 ruble note from the early days of the Russian republic.  The note  makes use of brighter colors than its Soviet counterparts.  It also incorporates the new Russian flag in its design.  Unfortunately the economy during this period was very weak and such a not could not buy much.

MMM Notes

These notes were issued by the MMM Corp by S. Mavroti.  The corporation was a pyramid scheme that ultimately collapsed leaving thousands of Russians in poverty.
