More about the uniform...

The winter tritsvetnaia kamuflirovannaia odezhda (TTsKO) uniform was first issued around 1982 where it began to replace the 1981 'six pocket' uniform issued to the airborne forces.  It is also known as the "three color" or "woodland" pattern in the West, and called the "Mabutu" by Soviet security forces serving in Africa.  The uniform is made of 100% cotton.  The jacket is designed to be worn tucked into the trousers.  A set of suspenders attached to the trousers secure the jacket by means of two suspender holes on the front and one on the rear.  The pockets on the jacket secure by means of buttons, except for the shoulder sleeve pockets which secure by velcro.  A pistol holster can be found inside the jacket on the left side.  The trousers have pockets at hip level and a pair of cargo pockets.  The knees and elbows are reinforced with additional material.

The uniform was also meant to help phase out the M-1955 paratrooper coverall that had been in use since the 1950's.  It did this by means of the suspender set that tightly secured the trousers to the jacket when jumping from aircraft.  This solution was not only more economical, but also improved combat efficiency in the field (as there was no need to change out of or keep up with a separate coverall after an airdrop).

This uniform was most commonly seen with airborne forces in Afghanistan, though army and embassy security forces in Africa also wore it.  A slightly greener colored version of the uniform was also made.  It is often called the "Woodland Type 2" by militaria collectors in the West.  The uniform was worn well into the 1990's by Russian airborne forces until it was finally replaced by the M-1994 'VSR' pattern and the M-1998 'Flora' pattern camouflage.  This example is size 50-4 and is dated 1985.
