Interior Pictures of the
'Golf' Class / Project 628
Submarine

In this section we have placed rare interior photos of the 'Golf' submarine.  As with the photos on the previous page, they are all authentic are now property of the Sword of the Motherland Foundation.  All but the last two were taken by a Soviet sailor during his time on board the boat.  The bottom two were taken by the US Navy during the Cold War.  More photos will be added as they are acquired.

Opening a window to let in some air..

In this picture you can see two sailors.  One is opening a window so that he can use the portable loudspeaker to talk to the crew of an approaching resupply ship.  You can see how thin the windows of the submarine are.  This is because the tower of the submarine is not pressurized like the rest of the boat and floods when it submerges.

Activity in the Tower

The photographer in this picture has moved to the rear of the tower by the stairs.  You can see part of the stairwell in the upper right of the picture.

The two crewmen look rather busy, probably because they are about to pull alongside the replenishment ship shown on the previous page.

On duty

These two pictures show the same sailor as he goes about his duties in the tower of the submarine.  Both photos were taken within minutes of eachother.  The purpose of the control that he is operating is unknown to us at this time, and if any readers know what it is used for we would very much like to know.

Deep inside the 'Golf' submarine

This picture shows the one of the machine spaces inside the 'Golf' submarine.  The exact location in the boat is unknown to us at this time, but many pipes, wires, and switches can be seen here.

There is also an electric fan in the top center of the picture as the submarine was probably not the most comfortable place to work.  You might also notice that directly above the sailor's head is a picture of a girl.

A Soviet Tug and Golf Class Submarine in Ice

This picture was taken by the US Navy in January 1966 and shows a Soviet fleet tug number MB-11 standing ready to assist the Golf submarine (number 252) which is moving in ice floes east of the La Peroush strait.

A Golf-I underway

Here we have a picture of Golf #783 running on the surface.  This picture was taken by the US Navy on 12 August 1961, but no location was given.
