More about the uniform...

The summer work uniform of the 1988 regulations was differed from the M-1969 uniform only in its color.  Its pattern was identical to the late 1969 uniforms to the point that they shared the same production standard number: Ty RSFSR 01-784-82.

Its pullover tunic featured a single left breast pocket with a white space where a sailor’s department and shift were written.  Two buttons on the neckline are used to attach the neckerchief which is worn over the tunic lapels.  Short shoulderboards in either light blue (for naval aviation) or black (for general naval personnel) are worn with this uniform.

The peakless bezkozirka cap with a band identifying the fleet that the sailor is a part of.  An enlisted M-1969 cockade is affixed to the front of the cap above the band.  White caps were typically authorized for wear with this uniform although photographs have shown black ones worn with the uniform as well.

The trousers of the uniform are made in the same dark blue color and is fastened by means of internal buttons.  Two hip pockets are also provided for holding small objects.  Our examples show that both the tunic and trousers were made in the Tutaev Sewing Factory in 1991.

Service Chronology (1) (2) (3) (4)

The 1988 summer sailor’s work uniform was an evolution of the M-1969 version.  It changed the color of the uniform was changed to dark blue however.  The uniform continued to be worn alongside its predecessor for several years as evidenced by our examples.  It was eventually withdrawn from service in 1994 when the new Russian Federation regulations called for a new navy work uniform.  In keeping with the habit of only implementing slight changes to the work uniform, the 1994 uniform appeared very similar to the M-1998 it replaced, but use a piloitka rather than the traditional bezkozirka headwear.
