The PNV-57 Night Vision Helmet

Here you can see the PNV-57 night vision goggles and their helmet as they are worn.  The top right picture shows the goggles in the up position, while the bottom right picture shows them in the down position.  The markings on the PNV-57 padded tank crewman's helmet can be seen below.  This particular helmet is size-2 (medium) and was made in 1977.

Electric Power Unit

Mounted on the rear of the padded helmet is the electric power unit.  The unit acts as more of a transformer converting the 12 volt electrical power from the vehicle into the proper voltage used by the light amplifier tubes of the headset.

The top right picture shows the top of the power unit and the retaining strap that fastens it to the helmet.  The grey metal cable is a flexible metal cover that contains the wires that supply the headset with power.

The picture to the immediate right shows the back of the unit.  Both the left and right sides of the power supply can be seen in the pictures below.  The side retaining straps can also be seen here.

The base of the power unit is shown in the bottom right picture.  In this view you can see where the main power supply wire connects to the power unit.  The two small grey screws on either side of the unit keep both the top and bottom halves fastened together, while the large cap conceals a blade switch that allows the unit to work on either 12 volt or 24 volt power.

Light Amplifier Headset

In this series of pictures the light amplifier headset can be seen.  The top right picture shows the unit from above, along with the main power cable that connects to the unit's right side.

Directly below you can see the PNV-57 from the right side.  On the bottom right you can see the left side of the unit.  In both of these pictures the hinge that allows the unit to be folded upwards can be seen.

To the immediate right you can see another picture of the PNV-57, this view shows the headset from directly below.

The picture below shows the rubber eye pieces of the unit and what it would look like from the wearer's point of view.  At the bottom right you can see a close-up view of the front of the light amplification unit.

Markings and Lens Covers

In this section you can see the markings on the headset and the lens covers that protect the unit.  The picture on the top right show the unit designation and its serial number: 77P3319.

Below you can see a close up of the lens covers that come with the unit.  The one on the left is the outer cover, while the one on the right shows the inside of the lens cover.  On the bottom right you can see the unit with the covers attached.
