This section has many high detail pictures of the SVD sniper rifle. Virtually every section of the weapon has been photographed and described. To go to a specific part of the weapon simply click on the desired section below. Some of these pages may take a little while to load.

The Front and Rear Iron Sites

The SVD is equipped with backup iron sights.  The front site is can be crudely adjusted in the same manner as AK-series rifles.  The rear site is also similar to the AK-types but is adjustable out to 1200 meters.  It should be mentioned that these sites are very crude and are not very accurate, but are sufficient over close ranges if the PSO-1 scope is damaged and rendered unusable.

The Gas Port and Sling Attachment Point

A close-up of the gas tube can be seen in the bottom left picture.  It can be adjusted or even removed by using the wrench-like attachment on the cleaning kit.  The front sling attachment shown at the bottom right is located on the left side of the rifle.  The sling is identical to those used by the AK-series rifles.

The PSO-1 Scope

Perhaps the most distinctive component of the SVD sniper rifle is the PSO-1 scope.  It is issued with each rifle and can be used to effectively engage man-sized targets out to 1300 meters.  It also has a passive infrared capability so that if can engage targets at night so long as an IR illumination source is available.

It has an illuminated reticle that is powered by a single battery.  The battery compartment can be seen below.

Two dials (seen at right) are used for zeroing the rifle.  They are capable of very fine adjustment and contribute greatly to the rifle's accuracy.

The scope also has a shroud that can be extended so that sunlight doesn't reflect of the lens and give away the shooters' position.

The Receiver

Here are a variety of close-up pictures of the SVD's receiver.  They show how the PSO-1 scope is fitted to the rifle, where the selector switch is located,  what it looks like with the bolt pulled back, and a look inside the receiver with the bolt assembly removed.
