The medal commemorating the 1500th anniversary of the city of Kiev was awarded to those who participated in the defense of the city during the Great Patriotic War, the soldiers who liberated it from German occupation, and to the underground partisan fighters of the region. Kiev was one of the three capitals of the Russian people. From 882 to 1132 it was the center of Kievan Rus, an early feudal state that took shape in Eastern Europe as a result of the unification of the Slav tribes. During the Soviet era the city was the capital of the Ukrainian Soviet Republic. Today the city is the capital of modern Ukraine. The small ribbon was introduced with the medal and was worn on many parade-service and parade (out of formation) uniforms when medals are not authorized to be worn. | ||||||
